How do I join ASI?

Every currently enrolled student who pays the student body fee at Fresno State is automatically included in the membership of Associated Students, Inc. (see the ASI org chart). Member status gives fee-paying students the right to cast votes in the election, run for an elected position, and serve on campus committees.

Each academic year ASI receives numerous submissions to become part of Fresno State’s ASI team. We have provided helpful information for you to consider before you file for office. Please read carefully and we wish you luck on your prospective campaign.

There is a strict deadline for submissions so please submit the required documents to asi-electionscommissioner@mail.fresnostate.edu  and ASI Director of Operations, James Martinez at jdmartinez@csufresno.edu with all required forms attached to your submission. The deadline to submit is February 23, 2022. We wish you the best of luck on your respective campaigns and hope to meet you soon.

Below you will find information pertaining to file and run as a candidate for ASI student body elections. With respect to COVID – 19, ASI will be conducting  the 2022 election online and electronically. As a result, ASI has modified election rules and processes accordingly. Please read carefully to learn further about the positions, opportunities, and documents you will need to submit for the 2022- 2023 elections.

  • The ASI election process is outlined by ASI’s Policies and Bylaws. The purpose of elections is to choose the 22 student representatives who will serve a (1) year term of office (June 1-May 31) representing students and providing them with a voice and vehicle to create actionable and meaningful change through the democratic process on the Fresno State campus. Below you will find current elected positions within ASI:

  • Elections occur annually and online each spring semester. Election results determine the ASI Senate, the offices of President, Vice President of Finance and Vice President of External Affairs. In order to serve in one of these elected positions you must meet eligibility requirements in accordance with California State University, Fresno, and the CSU Chancellor’s Office, submit required documents, as well as follow election protocols and processes and ultimately win your race.
Who is eligible to run for office?

Students are eligible to run for office if they meet the CSU system-wide requirements.

Grades – All candidates must be enrolled and in good standing at the university. Candidates must have received at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in fall 2020[JDM1], and have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 for all college work. Graduate students must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA in all graduate work. Candidates may not be on academic, disciplinary or administrative probation.

Unit Load – Undergraduate candidates must maintain 6 units per semester while running for office. Graduate and credential students must maintain 3 units per semester while running for office. Undergraduate students are allowed to earn a maximum of 150 semester units or 125 percent of the units required for a specific baccalaureate degree objective, whichever is greater. Graduate and credential students are allowed to earn a maximum of 50 semester units or 167 percent of the units required for a graduate or credential objective, whichever is greater.

Residency – Undergraduate candidates for office must have been enrolled on the campus and have completed at least one semester prior to the election, earning a total of 6 semester units during that year. Graduate and credential student candidates for office must earn 6 units per semester of continuous attendance as a new graduate or credential student to be eligible. Graduate and credential students who received a bachelor’s degree or credential within the past three years from the same campus must have earned a total of 12 semester units during their last year as an undergraduate to be eligible.

Executive Positions

There are four (4) executive positions that make up the executive team of ASI: the President, Executive Vice President, Vice President of Finance, and Vice President of External Affairs. Each is responsible for and performs various tasks that are necessary to operate and manage ASI. Below you will find a brief description of these positions and their corresponding duties, responsibilities and expectations.

President – The President serves as the Chief Executive Officer and directs ASI’s activities and affairs and is responsible for the administration of ASI activities. The President also serves as the primary representative on University-wide committees and can establish committees in coordination with the executive team, submit nominations for student appointments, supervise the executive team and cabinet and perform other duties that are in the best interest of students, ASI and Greater Fresno State community.

Executive Vice President – The Executive Vice President is appointed by the ASI Senate and serves as the Chair of the Student Senate, but not allowed to vote except when necessary to break a tie-vote. The Executive Vice President also represents ASI, along with the President, on University-wide committees and works closely with ASI’s professional staff, and the executive team to coordinate and facilitate Senate policy initiatives, and proposals.

Vice President of Finance – The Vice President of Finance is ASI’s Chief Financial Officer and oversees preparation of the annual budget in accordance with the fiscal policies established by the Student Senate and under the general guidance of the Finance Committee. The Vice President of Finance keeps and maintains correct books and records of accounts of the properties and business transactions of ASI, including accounts of its assets, liabilities, receipts, disbursements, gains, losses, capital, and other matters customarily included in financial statements.

The Vice President of Finance also advises the President and Student Senate on ASI’s fiscal affairs and conditions and presides as Chair of the Finance Committee.

President of External Affairs -The Vice President of External Affairs is ASI’s campus community, local, city, and statewide liaison and oversees preparation of resolutions in regards to legislation, action, or recognition affecting ASI externally. External Affairs also entails building and maintaining relations with alumni. The Vice President of External Affairs should serve as the Corporation’s representative at the California State Student Association (“CSSA”), should the Corporation be a member, with or in place of the President. The Vice President of External Affairs shall keep and maintain, or cause to be kept and maintained, adequate and correct reports and records of CSSA meetings and all other off campus meetings.

The Vice President of External Affairs also advises the President and Student Senate on external affairs affecting the Corporation. The Vice President of External Affairs shall provide updates to the Student Senate on legislation, action, recognition, and all other matters relevant to the external affairs of the Corporation no less than twice a semester at a regular meeting of the Student Senate. The Vice President of External Affairs shall preside as Chair of the Legislative Committee.

College

Each College comes with a different set of expectations and needs. Be aware of the responsibilities that your college has and read below for further information.

Senate

The student Senate is responsible for among other things: (i) adopting an annual budget and (ii) adopting policies and positions concerning the affairs of ASI. There are nineteen (19) senators until an Executive Vice President is selected from among the at-large Senators at which point the number of senators is reduced to eighteen (18).

Senators are elected either as representatives of their academic college/school or in an at-large position.  There are eight (8) Senate positions representing the colleges of Arts & Humanities, Health & Human Services, Science & Mathematics and Social Sciences, as well as the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, Craig School of Business, Lyles College of Engineering and the Kremen School of Education & Human Development.

The remaining senator positions, entitled “at-large” positions are more commonly referenced by the “area of responsibility” taken on by the respective senators after being elected (Athletic and Recreational Affairs; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Greek Affairs; Health and Wellness; Operations and Resident Affairs; Student Affairs and Engagement; Sustainability; Veteran and Transfer Affairs; Undergraduate and Graduate Affairs; University Innovation). Senators make up the voting board for the organization.

    This year, ASI has altered how it will conduct the 2022 student body election from  previous years. ASI will require petitions to run for student body offices to be submitted without obtaining nominating signatures. Submit your petition to both the asi-electionscommissioner@mail.fresnostate.edu and cc jdmartinez@csufresno.edu. It is advisable to use a subject line stating the purpose of the email, so “Election Petition (Your Name and Office)” would is required.

How do I vote?

Each student will be notified and receive an email to their university email on March 22, 2022 with a link, username and password to cast an electronic vote for the 2022 ASI Student Body Election. Use this link to go to the voter portal.

If you encounter any issues accessing the student voter portal, did not receive an email with your designated username and password, or have questions, please contact the ASI Election Commissioner at asi-electionscommissioner@mail.fresnostate.edu, or call the ASI Business Office at 559-278-2656.

Please be sure to have appropriate documentation ready and available for review and reference purposes. ASI will thoroughly investigate any and all claims that are credible and evidenced.
